Re: [Phys-l] techshop opportunity

Decide whether you are more of a 'woodshop' person or a potential metalworker.

Have my own home woodshop and occasionally build furniture so I'm definitely going toward the metal working. Had to take a machine shop class as a grad student but that was 20y ago, and have never set foot in one since - familiar territory, but need to be retrained.

Seriously, stop by, take the tour, talk to the staff and members.
Some VERY creative juices are flowing there.

Thanks Chuck for the addl offline contact info! I'll let you know how it goes.

An example of the sort of project I might consider is: design an electromagnet for a specific field pattern, build it, and then evaluate the "success" of the resulting field pattern. But for a project like this, I would like it to roughly approximate a solution to a known problem; that is, I would want to target a field pattern that is relevant to a modern engineering/physics issue (not that I could do it very well as a hobbyist - it's the experience I'm after).

Thanks for the ideas so far - not sure I'm up to BW's prescient post regarding the fusion reactor :-)
