Re: [Phys-L] Something to ponder and worry over

Yes, it is spilling over from the US. And Muslims generally oppose
evolution, so I would not include the Middle East in the group. Russia is
still an enigma wrapped in a riddle... so we do not know how they will
eventually go. Well at least their government is a bit of an enigma. In the
US it is the Evangelicals and Baptists who are generally opposed, while
other religious groups are not or actually in support of evolution. Nuns
write articles on it according to a biologist colleague! Turkey might
zig-zag and become more secular the next election.

It is assumed by many that all people on this list support evolution, but I
know that is not true. The majority do support it on this list, and the
minority feels cowed by some of the frequent contributors with great
credentials. I always find it surprising how some people on these lists
think that certain ideas are shared by all. I know some of my ideas are
shared, but others are opposed with great vitriol. For example some people
think all members of this list are atheists or agnostics, but many
scientists do belong to churches or are spiritual.

Sigh, won't they learn the lesson of Galileo? When religious or political
groups oppose science they lose in the end and also lose some credibility.
But hopefully it won't take centuries more.

"The US is the only major industrial nation with this
problem. It isn't a problem in Europe, Asia, Antarctica,
Australia, India or SW Asia as far as I know."

Evolution is becoming more controversial in Europe, and it is
widely opposed in many Muslim countries. Evolution science is
under increasingly harsh attack by the government in Turkey.
I read that the great majority of biology teachers in Arab
countries oppose evolution.
