I thought it was UV that was killing the amphibians, but that was some
time ago when I read that. Also, for a change we (US and the others)
did something about the ozone hole and I understand it's recovering.
Since I've not heard lately about the amphibians, maybe that was it?
The cell 'phone and amphibians are certainly a wonderful opportunity to
combine Bio., Chem., and Physics. [Ludwik]

This URL is a model of an accessible but scholarly review of factors causing
amphibian malformations.

http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-043-01/

Briefly: Endocrine Disruptor insecticides can mimic sex hormones:
human sex hormone increases in the environment
(associated with birth pill etc)
UVB can cause genetic damage,
Trematode (flat) worms parasitic on snails
cause mechanical disruption to amphibian growth centers;
fertilizer runoff can increase populations of parasites with other
populations:
low potassium & sodium in the water can potentiate a factor mentioned
above.

About high dose challenges: I recall that investigators assaying magnetic
field sensitivity in animals were sometimes defeated by too high,
or inhomogeneous test fields.
