I agree that it seems strange that the equal sign wouldn't be
readable. Is it possible that the equal sign is being used as some
escape character by the listserv program and thus is "reformatted" as
its ASCII code? I notice that when I view the messages in the
archives (via the web), none of the characters are displayed
using the "escape" code. I can even send them to myself with
no problem, so apparently the translation is not done by my
mailer.

As I expected, it turns out that the value '3D' is the hex value for
the ASCII 'equal sign'. But why this value name should be sent
following an equal sign itself is beyond me. I don't have similar
problems with other ASCII symbols and punctuation marks. What's with
the equal sign that makes it so special to email programs or the
phys-l server?
