Nobel prizes (was: Electrinos?)

I can't imagine why anyone would be upset at this year's choice of physics
laureates, or feel that the laureates' credentials were somehow suspect.
Zhores Alferov has a doctorate in physics from A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical
Institute in St. Petersburg and Herbert Kroemer has a doctorate in physics
from the University of Göttingen. Jack Kilby (whose degrees are in
electrical engineering) is a recipient of the National Medal of Science and
a former Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M
University.

Certainly no one here at UC Santa Barbara is complaining! It is remarkable
that our two laureates in the physics department (Walter Kohn in 1998, Alan
Heeger in 2000) received the Nobel for chemistry, and that our laurate in
the electrical and computer engineering department (Herb Kroemer in 2000)
received the Nobel in physics. No one can say that our scientists are
rigidly compartmentalized!

If you're pissed at the thought of a bunch of EEs winning the physics
Nobel prize
