Re: [Phys-L] physics of virus spread ... and scientific heresy

Re bee hives: I have been bingeing on a New Zealand police murder mystery series - Brokenwood Mysteries. One of the recent plots involved a bee-keeper whose hives were poisoned. An expert in these matters inspected his hive and noted the smell of petrol/gasoline.In a sad moment which rang strangely true, he mentioned previously needing to destroy an infected hive (In that region, it turns out that American Foul Brood is a leading bee disease, but the name was not mentioned.) He said the method is to wait until dusk when bees return to the hive; stopper their egress, and put a cup or two of gasoline into the hive. He mentioned hearing an increasing roar, followed by silence. I verified the method is used as an inferior approach compared with gamma irradiation (!!) here:

Very little science is "green fields" new discoveries; mostly it's

publish it, and move on.

This reminds me of a friend who had a bee hive in his office (UCSB), and an acoustical spectrum analyzer, inter alia.  (This was in the 60’s.)  He claimed that bees communicate acoustically (piping) in addition to the dances of K. von Frisch.  He was never able to publish [1] until KVF died, then Sci. Am. did.
