I am reminded of a story my grandfather liked to tell.  There once was a
farmer who thought his horse ate too much.  He decided to train the horse to
eat less.  He did this in a gradual way by feeding the horse a little less
each day.  He finally arrived at the day when the horse was to be fed no
food at all.  Unfortunately, the horse died on that day!  :-)
