All you can do issue the microwave popcorn setting and listen.

I believe there are iPhone applets that "listen" with the mic and time
pop intervals or count pops that are supposed to help with this. The app
needs to know the brand/size as well.

and there are apps that are fakes just showing a glowing burner for
practical jokers.
