Re: [Phys-L] popcorn physics

Dan has supplied me with an answer to my prob. with collecting popping data. I suspect one may use a comparator to eliminate the initial noise of the collision with the bag. My effort to collect data evolved from my popper to a large dutch oven with the lid acoustically isolated. I gave a talk on this to both the NorCal(Nevada) and the SoCal sections (AAPT).

Here's the latest version:

my dog "induced" deaths:

And, finally, my board ready to collect rain drops: [a dark board would result in the only "upside" of snow country]

Do you do this in the classroom? I am interested in what you do as I use radioactivity to teach the Poisson distribution. Popcorn would be a more interesting, practical application.

I was just microwaving some popcorn -- one of my favorite snacks. I can

All you can do issue the microwave popcorn setting and listen.

I believe there are iPhone applets that "listen" with the mic and time
pop intervals or count pops that are supposed to help with this. The app
needs to know the brand/size as well.

and there are apps that are fakes just showing a glowing burner for
practical jokers.
