Re: [Phys-L] teaching credentials +- qualifications +- administration

I mean having an administrator such as a dean from some other discipline come into your classroom or lecture hall, sit there for about fifteen minutes, leave, then call you in to evaluate you on your teaching techniques and strategies on the basis of this evaluation. Then she repeats it again in a month or so. The tests I have in mind are made up by others not in your department but from the physics departments of other colleges hired by the state on an hourly basis. You must give this exam at a given date and a given time and a set percentage of your students must pass it for your tenure to be renewed.

I'm not bashing university types... only saying that maybe some of you have taught in the high schools for a time, but you are still not walking in our shoes... You took off that pair of shoes a long time ago because they didn't fit or you saw greener pastures elsewhere.

Oh - you mean like major field tests, IDEA evaluations, etc.?

Time to stop the mutual bashing. I have taught in both HS and college. Even though I would not trade my current college position for a return to HS teaching, I have the greatest respect for HS teachers and what they have to put up with. I am amazed that they actually get to teach some physics. It's a totally different skill set that's required - especially in urban areas.
