The major problem with the "shorthand" explanation is that it simply does not make sense. When things don't make sense, then people memorize. Agreed that it is not being pedantic. It is a downright crime to use the shorthand rather than the explanation that makes sense. So many people do not even know what it means for science and math to make sense. They (including teachers) have memorized procedures and are lost when asked to explain the mechanism behind their memorized procedures.
