Michael D. Edmiston, Ph.D.

It is misleading to show the wheel rim as protruding inwards.
The rim's bead mating surface is cylindrical on a horizontal axis
in this region, with steep relief to a cylinder of smaller diameter
to ease fitting the tire with its steel banded bead over the steel
rim, with vertical flanges as fitted.
