First note to the students that these pictures were taken towards the end of the summer when sea ice is at its minimum. Then take them to the NASA site that has the complete data set. Let them plot the sea ice area as a function of time (print the pictures, cut out the ice area, weigh the result), plot the data examine the trend.

How do you respond to a 9th grader (or an adult for that matter), who
will then come back and say "but there are cycles of thawing and
refreezing that explain those images." Is there a good graph that
someone has at his/her fingertips that shows cyclical change and then
has change in recent years superimposed upon it?
