We should track down alumni (including doctors, lawyers, and Indian
chiefs) and ask them what elements of the course are relevant to their
work, and to their daily lives.
We should also track down the teachers of downline courses and ask them
what they consider relevant foundation for their courses.

There have been some surveys of skills used in the workplace:

and many discussions about what students should know at the K-12 and
college level

(and references therein)

These discussions led to the National Science Education Standards and
the Benchmarks for Science Literacy for K-12. A similar exercise might
be useful at the college and graduate levels.
