CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
for
NSF-sponsored Case Studies in Science Summer Workshops
Presented by the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science,
University at Buffalo, State University of New York, with funding from
the National Science Foundation

2nd workshop session: June 6-10, 2005
Workshop Location: State University of New York at Buffalo
Application Deadline: Applications submitted by March 21, 2005,
will receive first consideration
This five-day workshop focuses on training undergraduate college science
faculty to teach with case studies, to write their own cases, and to
assess their students' learning with cases. The final two days of the
workshop, participants teach a case before a student audience using a case
they have developed during the workshop or one taken from our case study
collection. Workshop participants are expected to produce a case study
within six months of the workshop for our national, peer-reviewed case
collection. Participation in the workshop is by application only and is
limited to 40 people per workshop session.
Our NSF grant funding allows us to offer the workshop to U.S. applicants
without a charging a registration fee. In addition, all workshops
materials, meals (breakfast Monday through lunch Friday), and on-campus
lodging (in the dorms) are covered. In addition, travel expenses are
covered by NSF for science faculty attending the workshop who are from
Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving
Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Minority Postsecondary
Institutions in the U.S. We can consider applications from U.S. high
school science teachers, under the same funding terms, on a limited basis.
Non-U.S. college science faculty applications will also be considered on a
limited basis, but we cannot provide any funding for such applicants and
must also charge a fee.

WORKSHOP DIRECTOR - Workshop Director Clyde F. (Kipp) Herreid is a
Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at
the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has conducted numerous
workshops around the country on case method teaching, team learning, and
problem-based learning. He is the author of a column on case studies
regularly featured in the Journal of College Science Teaching and Director
of the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science.
