I recall being at the bottom of an immense 70m pothole of large diameter
and overhanging mouth, so that the "static" rope that we'd just come down
on hung free the whole way, many metres from the surrounding walls. Sending
wave trains up the rope and watching them speed up very noticeably as they
climbed and slow as they descended (to the amusement of the people with me
who expected them to do the opposite) is exactly what I did, but I
neglected to time them!
