Re: Language and Physics



As we all know, language plays a critical role in conceptuallization, so
in that sense, most of the current activity in physics education
research deals with language. On of the strategies that
"people-changers" use, called "pace and lead" involves getting into
the same frame as the other(s) and them moving them beyond it. The
thrust in the current work, as I see it, is not to communicate with the
students in their language, but rather to get them to elict their ideas
in their language, and then begin to deal with it "constructively."

This approach differs from the "injection" model suggested by Leigh in
another message.

My question is this. Has this situation changed to any degree in the 32
years since this article was published? If so, how? If not, is there
still a problem in communication with the student or have the students
become more knowledgeable than they were 32 years ago? Finally, is
there any merit to Crane's suggestion that the language of the course be
used in the student's language at the beginning of the course and end up
with the language of physics at the end of the course?
