Assuming it really is oil (hydrocarbon), wiping with paint thinner
will usually work well. Heavier goo may require soaking and vigorous
rubbing. Occasionally the coating is closer to a varnish, in which
case acetone usually takes it off. (Caution: Acetone also takes off paint.)

After cleaning you will need to relubricate sliding parts and rub a
very light coating of oil over any steel parts to prevent rust.

I just got in some new calipers, vernier and micrometer, which were manufactured
in China and packed in some kind of light oil for shipping. Does anyone have
any suggestions on how to go about cleaning them up for use?
