external CD-rom drives

Hello,
I am seeking advice on the possibility of doing the following:

I would like to purchase an external CD-ROM drive that I could hook up
to an IBM machine running Windows 3.1 and
with appropriate cable change also hok up to a Mac running under System 7.0
I do not know if this is possible with the same CD-ROM player or not.
If it is, are there specific players that you know will or will not work.
I understand that the IBM will have to have a Sound card installed. I know that each computer will have to have software to talk to the disk drive.
I am not looking to use the drive as a source of software, but would like
to use something like Physics InfoMall or other similar text and picture
resources.
The department has recently been given a small grant by the PTA to
get a CD-ROM drive but we already have an IBM and MAC within the dept
and can't by two drives with the money.
Advice seriously sought.
Thanks.
