The greenish sky sometimes seen during thunderstorms means that the clouds
contain hail. This is a very significant observation.

That still doesn't say why green. I recall seeing an absorption graph
for water in Jackson's Electrodynamics that exhibits a sharp dip in
the blue-green part of the spectrum. I guessed at the time that
perhaps this was responsible, red and blue ends being preferentially
absorbed, but never got around to trying to estimate whether the
amount of water required would be reasonable. Has anyone else been
more industrious than me? I recall that at the time the military had
also become aware of this and had a scheme to communicate with
submarines via orbiting blue-green lasers. Nothing ever came of it.
