It isn't just Madison Avenue either. I'm still fighting the battle
here against the oceanographers who insist that the tidal bulge on
the Earth opposite the Moon is due to the centrifugal force following
from the Earth's rotation. After all, something has to fling it out
against the Moon's gravity, right??? Yeesh.
