Starting Academic Year: 2011-2012
Date Posted: February 3, 2011

The Hockaday School is an independent, college preparatory day and
boarding school for girls of strong potential and diverse backgrounds who
may be expected to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in a
rapidly changing world. With an enrollment of more than 1,000 students,
The Hockaday School is the nation’s largest pre-kindergarten through
grade 12 independent girls’ school.

Ranked among the country’s finest college preparatory schools, it was
founded almost a century ago and continues today to build on its original
four cornerstones: Scholarship, Character, Courtesy, and Athletics. The
School is seeking a Physics and Chemistry teacher to join a vibrant
Science Department committed to offering students an authentic science
experience. The teacher will embrace the Elements of Hockaday Science in
guiding bright, curious students through inquiry-based courses centered
around collaboration and experimental design. Emphasizing discovery, the
teacher will model habits of mind that promote student understanding and
appreciation of the wonder inherent in science. The teacher will encourage
students while they develop technical skill in collecting, reporting, and
interpreting data to uncover fundamental relationships rather than
memorizing equations from a text. In addition to teaching
responsibilities, the teacher will be a student advisor and be available
for student extracurricular activities. The teacher will have ongoing
opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications/Experience:
• An undergraduate and/or masters degree with an emphasis in physics;
extensive coursework in chemistry would be an asset
• A commitment to the ideals expressed in the Hockaday Tenets of Faculty
Excellence
• Preferably some experience as a working scientist
• Preferably some teaching experience at the upper school level, ideally
in independent schools
• Proficiency in the use of technology in laboratory investigations as
well as classroom teaching and administration
