Re: [Phys-l] Increasing student enrollment in Physics

I am new to this forum but I thought I would respond to the post about increasing student enrollment in physics. At my school we have quite a few students taking physics(4 full time physics teachers with school enrollment of about 1300). For us I think it is a combination of several factors that draw students to the physics courses. No one can deny the ability of popular teachers to draw students to their courses and we are lucky to have several of these teachers. We also offer different levels of both 1st year and 2nd year courses in addition to several clubs such as an astronomy club, robotics team, science olympiad team, forensics team, and a fledgling physics olympics team. As part of our courses we also include several well known projects that are popular with students such as Rube Goldberg machines, student made musical instruments, photography, bottle rockets, West Point bridge-building, etc. I know this doesn't help to get you started, I myself am not sure which came first, the interest in physics and that helped sustain interest in the other clubs or the other way around. But I think offering the "fun" activities even outside the classroom can help with enrollment in the courses.
