One partial solution I've discovered is to use harsh language with myself
when thinking about dishonesty. For example, I don't say to myself "I was
just stretching the truth a bit." Instead I say "I was telling a small
LIE." There are all sorts of euphamisms for lying. We can use them to
pretend to ourselves that were not really lying when in fact we are. If I
first describe my lies to myself honestly, THEN I can decide what level of
lying is acceptable. If instead I start pretending that my lies are
something other than lies, then I end up lying while maintaining
blindness. The word "lie" sounds harsh, but we shouldn't avoid it.
