Re: teaching loads and quality

Through a deal with the trustees the administration here has been
authorized to hire more full time positions but they have to be
lectureship positions, not tenure track. Rick (or anyone else), I was
wondering, if such a position was forced on you, what would you do, how
would you put such a person to use? They will be expected to do some
committee work but no research. I've thought of perhaps having this
person coordinate the labs (and teach most of them). What would be an
appropriate load of lab courses (one meeting at 3 contact hrs a week or
2 credit hrs)?

If you don't mind me jumping in here...We have lecturers in use
across all our science departments. They are regarded as full time
faculty and teach a full load as well as serve on committees. They do not
have to pursue any scholarship. If you are just instituting such
positions make sure they also have a promotion system for these people. In
our case, they can be promoted to senior lecturer status after 7 years
with an appropriate pay increase. These are very valuable faculty
members, and care must be taken that their positions are not abused by the
administration as source of cheap labor.
