Re: PHYS_L COURTESY

My own listservers have a 40K limit. It is very unwise to constantly send
500K jpegs to thousands of people, whether they are interested or not. I
myself see no big reason to exclude graphic attachments on PHYS-L, but I
would expect that their size be limited to, say, 10K. If most PHYS-L text
messages are 5K and below, it doesn't strain the inbox much. But with the
level of traffic here, a huge number of 40K messages would create
problems. The only way to handle graphics on list servers is either to
limit the number of subscribers, or to limit the file size. If you have
10 subscribers, huge attachments are not an issue. If you have hundreds
of people creating lots of traffic, file size and inbox-overload becomes a
major problem.

communications in the 21st Century?

I am fully prepared: I can immediately post a huge graphic on the web,
then give everybody the URL. In most email programs the URL will be a
clickable link so it can be viewed instantly.

Perhaps the real issue here is regarding people who have no ability to
create web pages, and rather than make the effor to learn, they instead
insist on their "right" to email a gigantic graphic to the entire
subscribership, who then has to upload the darned thing if they want to
read the tiny bit of text in the message.
