Welcome Back to School--and to Hurricanes '99

Logal.net kicks off its online events schedule for the 1999-2000 academic
year by taking students and teachers through an interactive exploration of
hurricanes present and past.

On Wednesday, September 29th, from 1:00 - 2:00pm ET, students around the
country will have a chance to chat online with hurricane meteorologist Stacy
Stewart. Stewart is a lead forecaster at the Tropical Prediction Center of
the National Hurricane Center in Miami, and he will be talking with
participants about hurricane science, the art of forecasting, and the storms
of the 1999 hurricane season. This live event will be available through the
Logal.net Web site (http://www.logal.net).

Please let us know by responding to this email if you are interested in
having your students participate in the live chat and/or the activities
described below.

The chat will culminate two weeks of hurricane-related, online activities
that classrooms can pursue at their own pace. Starting on Monday,
September 20--again through www.logal.net--students and teachers can
participate in a series of explorations that include predicting the courses
of live hurricanes; comparing the data of present storms with those in past
years; and building an archive of personal hurricane experiences.

The Hurricanes '99 Web pages will also include a wealth of other
hurricane-related information and links. We'll be paying special attention
to this season's hurricanes, including Hurricane Dennis and its impact on
the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Once students have completed an activity--such as predicting a hurricane's
track or reporting their own hurricane experiences--they'll be able to send
it in for posting on the Web site and for viewing by a Web-wide audience.

These activities will be aided by SimPlayer, a powerful Web application that
allows users to visualize data in a variety of dynamic graphs, charts, and
maps. SimPlayer is available for free download from the following web
address: http://www.logal.com/sim_ed/data_v5/earthpulse/setup.html

We'll see you in the eye of the storm.
