Re: Old guitar strings

On the other hand, it is impossible to eliminate beats, even in theory.
Any tuning of a piano leaves some intervals out of tune. For instance,
the standard "equal temper" tuning makes all major thirds quite sharp.
Most people are so used to this style of tuning, that they accept it as
the "correct" tuning, even though it is really just a compromise.

Yes -- "correct" tuning is what you are raised/learn and expect to hear.
Often brass players learn to play notes out of tune because their instrument
designs are compromises with a few particularly out-of-tune notes and they
aren't taught to correct them. (Unlike piano, playing brasswinds requires
you to hear the note in your head before you play it -- you don't just push
a button and get the pitch.) This can cause real problems later. Buy a tuner
for your kid in band if they're serious, so they don't have to work so hard
on developing correct tuning when they're 36 :^).
