But then, when I went to University I did not pay anything (indeed I got a grant to live on as well as having all fees paid by the local authority - this was not because I was in some way special: all home students admitted to a University got their fees paid; the top-up for living expenses was means-tested), so we are not as progressive as we were.

Of course, some Universities are able to be more selective in admission policy than others. I'm sure Cambridge would not have admitted me.

Yea, Kent refused, Manchester misread my intention, but Keele (a joke in some Brit. drama’s, more later) wrote, a bit late for the current, on writing, no next year I was admitted "instantly”, no interview, nothing, but the two faculty at U. Cal, Santa Barbara letters of recommendation. When I arrived, I soon found why. They were using the text by Bob Eisberg, who’d been my Master’s thesis advisor. I’d also been his first reader. So we lived comfortably on my demonstrator’s salary, no tuition. My first wife taught music at a local infant school, which we spent on our vacation in Dubrovnik. Serena born in the local hospital, no cost. Yes, Labour, before the removal (rewriting?) of clause IV, was wonderful.

bc …. now remembers his best Keele friend was a former Communist party member (he later married in to wealth [1]), and Keele was sometimes called the Kremlin on the hill.

p.s A fellow? Interviewed of one of the uxbridge colleges said he wouldn’t be at all unhappy if his daughter read at Keele — We foolishly didn’t attend any of the royal balls led by the Chancellor, Princess Margaret. The prof. surmising he’d never become the VC moved to the South and retired from Kent as the VC, D.J.E. Ingram.
