Re: [Phys-L] youtube the.tragic story of nikola Tesla

Well, then the answer to my question should be "yes."

The resistance of transmission lines causes power losses, P = I^2 R. With dc, most of the energy is lost over a short distance. With ac, you can increase the voltage and reduce the current via transformers, and transmit the power over much longer distances.

As we move toward making everything electric, we will see that much more energy will be needed to be input due the massive losses.

Every year, the Lawrence Livermore lab puts out an energy flow diagram (see https://flowcharts.llnl.gov/content/assets/images/energy/us/Energy_US_2019.png)

Out of 37 quads of energy input for electricity in 2019, only 12.7 were usable in the four sectors. You will also see that transportation using the internal combustion engine remains the least efficient.

Here is data that covers the range from 2002 to 2019 taken from these energy flow diagrams that shows that the usable energy has been decreasing over time as we have become more reliant on electrical energy. This has mostly been happening due to the change in our economy from industrial to services/commercial/high tech and changes in our consumer goods.

No, I just need to understand why more electrical energy can be transmitted when using ac

Just to check, are you asking why we use AC instead of DC for power transmission?

In this story of Tesla's life it is mentioned that a crucial reason for going with ac for the bulk of electric power transmission is the ability to deliver (I think) twice as much power with pre-existing electric lines.

Could someone please explain how that works.

Thanks,
