[Phys-L] IPCC to report that climate change situation has grown critical

Justin Gillis in today's New York Times reports on a leaked copy of the
third part of AR5.

"The report said that governments of the world were still spending far more
money to subsidize fossil fuels than to accelerate the shift to cleaner
energy, thus encouraging continued investment in projects like coal-burning
power plants that posed a long-term climate risk."

Although they don't say so explicitly, the authors are projecting that we
will hit the carbon ceiling in 2030, in agreement with the forecast in the
leaked IPCC draft report. In addition, the report states that, in terms of
cumulative emissions, the OECD, BRIC nations, and Indonesia now account for
less than 50% of emissions, and the rest of the world, including most of
the developing world, accounts for more than 50%.

best wishes,
Jim
