Re: [Phys-L] Where is the sky?

If it is the photo of the Moon with the Earth in the foreground, it is
probably the zoom effect. When you zoom into a picture the foreground
background appear flattened in distance. A favorite photographer's effect
is to take a picture of the Moon near the horizon with familiar objects in
the foreground but at a far distance. Then zoom in so the familiar objects
are resolved and you get a huge near moon. Typically this is done with
coyotes on a ridge howling silhouted against the moon. 3D perception is
tricky, and some people do not have any binocular 3D vision, while others
have weak binocular vision. The ones like me with very strong binocular
vision can easily become 3D addicts. Among notable ones were Eisenhower,
Bob Hope, Harold Lloyd...

Is this the flattening effect JD discusses or is the moon
"really" that close?

It's so very large WRT the earth it appears close.

bc thinks distance ~ 28 X earth's diameter not obvious.
