I'll guess that for the air in our atmosphere to 'appear' blue requires a great deal of depth/thickness to the later being observed.

For the astronauts in low orbit - does the blueness appear to be at ground level?  (Ignore the horizon for the nonce.)

They may not even notice the blueness except at the horizon - due to the richness of other color on the ground?
