It's elitist and undemocratic. But then that's what the ruling class wants.

Many do after their basic needs are satisfied, it's called volunteering.

Do you mean free to all qualified? The California Community College System is open to all HS grads.

Mine were, but then that's communism. My total ed. cost as an undergraduate (UCSB) was < $200/annum (books and incidentals not free -- the $57University incidental fee included funding for campus student orgs.)

Why should college be different than elem. and HS? Of course many in the ruling class want that ed. privatized also, so no diff.

bc's ed. (PhD) in England was free plus paid for a sinecure (demonstrator = TA), and volunteers at a local HS.
