[Phys-L] Mayan Calendar - was RE: Leap Second Computer glitches

I did a little poking around. Apparently the Mayans had 2 different years, one was solar and the other structured around motions of Venus. It's interesting that around 12/20/2012 Venus is rising at the same time that Jupiter is setting. That's science.

Whether the Mayan calendar actually predicts that opposition, I don't know. The sociology of that astronomical occurrence remains an anthropological speculation.

I plan to enjoy the event at 5 AM unless it's below freezing.
