A hermetically sealed, 2 cm vial atop a 1 cm detector...

Seems to me that the measured activity could change significantly if the bugs are redistributing radioactive cesium within the vial instead of reducing activity. Perhaps using a larger well-type detector will reduce this observed reduction.
