There is a newly rehabilitated theory in Meteorology (due to Richardson)
that weather ( rainfall etc.) can be described over several orders of
magnitude by a power law effect - which leads naturally to the idea
of fractal patterns: so turning this round, one can suppose that
a self-similar pattern which spontaneously forms may well be due
to some power law effect.
