My students taught me how to distinguish ordinate from absissa. They learned

for ordinate the mouth goes vertical when saying or....Now you know, too.

It takes just one inspired teacher with a gift for the dramatic gesture
to mouth this description, with appropriate hand-gestures, and THEIR
students are set for life. There's a whole litany of acronyms,
nonsense verses, silly similes and associations that ease the many bumps
in a student's road. It takes a teacher who will do what it takes,
and is not only interested in magisterial awe for his job, naturally.
