Re: [Phys-l] computers

In what way did it die?

Couldn't the answer be a clue as to the answer to your question?

bc, on his second and third PBs; the first [~ nine years old] in use by relative.

p.s. I was told by the owner of a TRS-80 that he'd never turned it off, i.e. for years (monitor off, of course). Also told, as by the web page, heating and cooling, like tubes, is the most damaging. My rule for kinescopes is, if for more than an hour, turn off. Back lighted screens when ever not in use, off -- mercury discharge lamps.

Not sure if this is really a "physics" question. My old laptop died (Mac),
and I now have a new one. I am wondering if it should be shut down every
night, or simply be left on "sleep mode." The manual states to "shut the
computer down if it won't be used for a day or two." The tech guys at my
school say to keep it on at all times because the heat up/cool down cycle
causes the most damage.

Any thoughts or personal experience with this? What should be done to
extend the life of a computer?
