Re: [Phys-l] Phys-l Digest, Vol 25, Issue 12

I guess I'm drawn in again.

Right on, Jack, and Steve Schroeder is a very distinguished Professor at A&M. It is my guess that Dressler is his postdoc.

Check closer to your source: <http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID. 25586,filter.all/pub_detail.asp>

I have also opined elsewhere that the AEI offer is on the cheap side.

The logical fallacies of argument ad hominem and argument from authority are flying thick in this discussion. Why do you guys discuss religion (you are arguing from belief) when there is so much interesting physics to discuss?

If you would like to see some source materials try <http://www.sfu.ca/ ~palmer/> and browse. I don't have the SOD on there, and I don't have the IPCC procedures document which imposes prior restraint on contributors, requiring them to edit their publications to assure there is no conflict with the SPL!

Bob Zanelli knows all about that; ask him. He may forward my emails to the group if he wishes to do so.

Hi all-
The name Andrew Dessler seems familiar. I think I may have collaborated with him at one time in some aspect of his work. For more information about him (he is a faculty member at Texas A & M):

I have no reason to believe hie would not respond to any reasonable inquiries.

One or two folks may have had a web error message due
to the URL break, despite Leigh's careful bracketing.

The letter is addressed to Steve Schroeder at the department of atmospheric
sciences, but further checking revealed there is no professor in the
department by that name. The letter was posted by Prof. Andrew Dessler.
Steve Schroeder is listed under research staff, but not under faculty.
Schroeder is listed with no bio. and no further information given.

Now why was a junior person who is research staff but not faculty offered
big bucks for writing the article? Why didn't they offer it to a well known
researcher who is on the faculty??

It looks like they are looking for people who sympathize with them, and not
people who have good credentials. I would draw the conclusion that they are
grasping for straws. While a series of articles by second tier people may
convince politicians and the public, but it will not convince scientists in
the field.

The Guardian article said:
One American scientist turned down the offer, citing fears that the report
could easily be misused for political gain. "You wouldn't know if some of
the other authors might say nothing's going to happen, that we should ignore
it, or that it's not our fault," said Steve Schroeder, a professor at Texas
A&M university.

Well they had it wrong, as he is on the staff, but not a professor.
