Bending over with your glove hand on your front knee (facing the catcher)
and the ball behind your back is a natural and comfortable position from
which to take signs from the catcher, before assuming the "set" position.
If you'll stand on a pitcher's mound, as you would with runners on base, and
(pretend to) take signs from the catcher, you'll see why. Remember to keep
your pivot foot in contact with the pitcher's plate the entire time.

I think they bend over to block the glare from sky or lights with
the cap bill.


OK, squinting seems reasonable, but why do some pitchers bend over
with the ball behind their back/butt -- This seems so goofy -- Of
course the whole game seems goofy to me -- Which is worse, baseball
or golf?
