Re: [Phys-l] Interim Report on the Hake List Methodology

In his Phys-L post of 05 Aug 2006 07:43:12-0500 titled "Interim Report on the Hake List Methodology" the kind, diplomatic, and socially aware Brian Whatcott wrote [bracketed by lines "WWWWWW. . . ":

In response Jack Uretsky, world champion reply-button pusher, hit his reply button to send this one-liner:

"Nicely understated, Brian,"

PLUS ALL of Whatcott's previously archived post.

It's because of the finger-jerk reply-button-pushing Uretsky's of the internet, that I sometimes preface my posts with a plea, so aggravating to Whatcott:

"You reply to this long (xx kB) post please don't hit the reply button unless you prune the copy of this post that may appear in your reply down to a few relevant lines, otherwise the entire already archived post may be needlessly resent to subscribers."

Of course, that plea generally goes unheeded as subscribers' hard drives and discussion-list archives become littered with already archived posts. DOES URETSKY OWN STOCK IN HARD-DRIVE FACTORIES?

In any case, I could be wrong, but I think Whatcott and Uretsky may be hinting that they do not appreciate my posts. For such people I once posted directions on "How To Avoid Seeing Posts By Irritating People" [Hake (2005)].

The method involves monitoring posts on the archives, while receiving NO MAIL from the list. For lists running on LISTSERV software, one can accomplish this by subscribing in the NOMAIL option. For Phys-L, I think an equivalent option is available at <https://carnot.physics.buffalo.edu/mailman/listinfo/phys-l>. [Please correct me if I'm wrong.].

BTW, for those masochists who enjoy PRETENTIOUS, OVERBLOWN, and BORING posts, my latest is "Do Underprepared College Students Benefit from Engagement?" [Hake (2006)].
