There was a science fiction where the protagonists were put into a cage by
aliens. The aliens only recongnized the humans as intelligent when the
humans acquired a pet mouse (as I recall). So the pet test has also been
proposed as a test of intelligence.

Perhaps it is not intelligence that animals lack, but a sense of vanity.
