[Phys-L] Re: Make and Take Ideas

After demonstrating a flame tube at a teacher workshop, one of the
teachers returned after a weekend to show off his copy of my tube. His
worked well except for one thing - he forgot to put a dam between the
end of the tube and the speaker. Of course, gas permeated the paper
cone. All that happened was the cone caught fire & burned through. We
shut off the gas as soon as the fire at the cone was seen. So, yes,
there could be consequences to your showing/ helping teachers make such
a device. Luckily that time they were minimal.

Last year we conducted a "Make and Take" workshop for area high school physics
teachers to build a flame tube from an aluminum down spout.

I would be happy to share the design plans, but I am a little concerned about
the liability issues.

I have used my flame tube successfully for over twenty years, both with LP and
natural gas. Still, I don't know what might go wrong if someone else builds a
leaky one, and I certainly do not want to be held accountable.

They do make a great demonstration, though.
