It seems that Alessandro Volta mentioned the term in connection with his
  celebrated Pile.  I believe that this reference confirms the assertion:

VOLTA, ALESSANDRO (1793),  "Account of Some Discoveries made by Mr. Galvani ...
  in two letters from Mr. A. Volta ... to Mr. Tiberius. Cavallo",
  Philosophical Transactions, 83:1 (1793), pp. 10-44.
