[Physltest] [Phys-L] Re: color coding

A couple of additional remarks about color coding:

The color code for 115Vac power wiring differs radically
from the color code for the DC wiring inside computers.

In particular, for the DC harness inside a computer, black
more-or-less universally means ground. Red is +5Vdc,
orange is +3.3Vdc, yellow is +12Vdc, and white is -5Vdc.
For details, see e.g.
http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=31105&seqNum=4

This creates tremendous potential for negative transference.

There cannot be any simple mnemonic that says
black always means _________________
because the correct meaning is context-dependent.

So you'll just have to keep your wits about you. Be alert
to the possibility that the next black wire you see may be
different from the last eleventeen black wires you've seen.
(Alas I wasn't alert enough this morning.)
