[Physltest] [Phys-L] Re: 'Seeing' frequencies above 30-40Hz (fwd)

Does anyone have a low-budget activity in which one can experience
the relationship between rate of vibration and pitch?

We acquired some "talking tapes" rather cheaply; notches are cut in the
plastic tapes in such a way that when scraped along the surface of a
semi-resonant object, a playback of a recorded voice is produced. [The
typical activation involves the pulling of the plastic tape along the
edge of a hole cut in the bottom of a plastic cup.] The faster you pull
the tape, the higher the pitch of the sound, so one must practice a bit
before determining the optimal rate.

An even lower-tech example is related: open or close a zipper; changing
the rate that the teeth of the zipper are encountered changes the pitch
which is produced.
