It seems to me that while techniques may come and go, there is
one aspect that comes up again and again: the need for students
to examine their own learning.  This is called metacognition,
self-assessment, inquiry, whatever - take your pick.  The reason
why it must come up again and again is because this is hard -
both for the teacher and the student.  It doesn't help that
people start implementing the techniques incorrectly (as in
"guided inquiry = discovery").
