I think this is a wonderful discussion which shows so clearly the role of
model in the development of scientific thinking. I've not be reading this
all carefully, but I gather the empirical data are mixed at best, and the
differences of opinion arise when one applies various models to the data.
It reminds me of the Kopanek/Ptolemy "debate." The data didn't tell you,
so you went with what your beliefs were.
What better examples of the role of model, mechanism, and belief systems
in the development of science.
