Well text only could be ASCII, but it could also mean that the character set
could allow extended text. This would involve such things as double byte
characters and could consist of foreign characters along with the normal
ASCII characters. The problem of compatibility with other languages will
probably make this type of thing happen more often.

successful with MS Word? How can an MS word
document be saved in the pure ASCII form?

Because MS is evil bad and nasty. Try WP -- It will work there.
